About Us

Established May 11, 2007, MEKIC is located in the heart of Montreal’s Plateau Mont-Royal. This one of a kind cultural organization has four components that are active in four complementary fields: an arts centre, an art gallery, a bookshop, and the publisher Ketabe Iran Canada.
A dynamic place for dissemination, MEKIC’s primary mission is to facilitate and promote the discovery of the art, history, culture and literature of Southwest Asia (commonly called the Near and Middle East).

Art Gallery

Since its inception, the primary objective of MEKIC’s art gallery has been to showcase the contemporary art of Southwest Asia. Running between five to eight exhibitions per year, the gallery presents works by both well established artists as well as talented young and mid-career artists who express themselves in various media such as painting, sculpture, ceramics, miniatures and photography. Certain artists represented by the gallery live outside Canada, and often exhibit work in the gallery that has never before been seen on the American continent. Several other artists currently reside within Quebec. Roughly fifteen artists are represented by the MEKIC art gallery.

Cultural Centre

MEKIC has organized over a hundred cultural activities such as lectures, painting workshops, poetry reading evenings, book launchings, musical evenings, film viewings, and evenings dedicated to Iranian traditional festivities such as Nowruz and Yalda. MEKIC aims to be a meeting place to exchange and debate around a book, a painting, or a topic of current interest. Cultural activities are organized on average twice a month and are conducted either in French, English, or Persian.
Bookstore and Lending Library MEKIC Bookstore exhibits books in three languages. The Persian Bookstore of MEKIC offers a comprehensive collection of Farsi books, CDs and DVDs. The great collection of the French and English books satisfies those seeking knowledge in the various subjects of history, culture, and politics of the people and the countries of South West Asia. MEKIC Library offers a collection of books especially provided for this purpose by our generous donors. The library offers lending serviced for members only.
Publishing House The MEKIC publisher is a branch of a head office established in Iran many years ago. In Montreal, the MEKIC publishing house aims to translate important literary works of Southwest Asia into French .
